Now This Kid Knows How to Party!

January 2, 2008 by dave

I read with disbelief this San Jose Mercury News story about a 19-year-old from Morgan Hill, who was arrested for driving under the influence three times over the Christmas season. On three separate occasions, he was caught, arrested and released for drunk driving.

This just blows me away. First, the legal drinking age in California is 21, so a 19-year-old shouldn't be drinking at all. Second, you'd think after the first DUI, he'd have been just a wee bit more careful about finding a designated driver or calling a cab. Obviously this guy has some serious alcohol abuse issues that need to be dealt with. Fortunately, he should have some time to work on that.

According to the California vehicle code book, for the first conviction of DUI, a person may be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for no less than 96 hours but no more than six months. Fines range from $390 to $1,000.

Also, the driver's license is suspended and the driver must attend classes related to alcohol, Palsgrove said. It is possible for people to obtain a restricted driver's license for school or work after a hearing by the DMV.

A second conviction is punishable by 90 days to one year in jail and a fine from $390 to $1,000. For the third arrest, the penalty is from 120 days to one year in jail and a fine from $390 to $1,000.

Hopefully this court mandated intervention will have an impact on young Anthony.
