How to Get Out of Jury Duty
I recently received a jury duty summons. The date is for Monday. In our court, you can call after business hours the day before and find out whether you need to go in. I called this evening and I am supposed to report on Monday. When I notified my boss and fellow employees, I got back a number of suggestions for how to get out of jury duty. Of course they weren't serious, but some of them were pretty funny. I thought I'd share and solicit you to share your favorite method, real or imaginary.
The suggestions I have so far are:
- Wear a T-shirt that reads, "Guilty" in large letters.
- Every time the judge asks a question, respond, "Guilty. Oh... sorry. Is that too soon?"
- As much as possible, hum the theme song from COPS.
- Tell them that you're a member of the Antijurian church and you're not able to participate on religious grounds.
So, what is your favorite way to get out of jury duty? Click here to post your suggestion in our comments area. Rest assured that this is intended to be humorous. I'm not suggesting that you try any of these, nor am I suggesting that it isn't your (and my) obligation as a citizen to participate in the jury system.
I hope I get on the panel this time for a short case. I've never served before. I had one chance a few years ago but my employer at the time would only pay for 3 days of jury duty and this was a murder trial thought to last about two weeks. I was very disappointed. I'll update you later on how it turns out.
