Legal Challenge to LAUSD Takeover

Since they're not having enough success in swaying public opinion toward protecting the status quo, the opponents of the LAUSD governance change are now looking to the courts for salvation. This LA Daily News article describes concerns from a state legislative council and LA's own chief legislative analyst that perhaps the transfer of power from the LAUSD board to the Mayor may be a violation of the state constitution.

The mayor's counsel says the bill is airtight and that the negative opinions are coming from early drafts of the bill and not the currently amended version.

Whichever way the bill comes out, rest assured there will be legal challenges that will likely tie up any changes in LAUSD's governance for years to come. Year after year, new students will enter LAUSD and exit LAUSD without having received the high-quality public education they deserve.
